One of the best debuts I’ve read in years.As a founding member of the legendary British alt-pop band Suede, Mat Osman is truly in his element with this astonishing debut. This is a slightly slowburn mystery; there’s a lot to absorb -possibly too much for some – but I found I was enjoying these characters so much that I didn’t the book to finish. The twin brothers are perfectly realised, the geeky Adam, the hedonistic Brandon; combined into the answer-seeking single twin, with Adam learning to play his brother’s part almost faultlessly. Shy, bookish Adam Kussgarten lives in a Notting Hill flat surrounded by the miniature model kingdom he has created. The life of wannabe rockstar Brandon is clearly informed by the author’s day job, but his twin Adam(A & B, geddit? )’s obsession is fresh and original, and gives hope that Osman has much more in him to come.
