The trail continues to the left of the second lake and to the right of the third (very long) lake. To the northwest, the well named Mount Langley sits on the border of Sequoia National Park and the John Muir Wilderness at the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I got eaten alive my mosquitos along Long Lake at 4pm.
Have a great hike!Do you know when the campgrounds open this year at Mt. Follow the nicely marked Cairns along the way to the left instead. One last stop at the pit toilets and we were on the trail around 4am. You are also entering SEKI at this point. The summit was beautiful and I found the easy way down by following the Cairns.

I waited for a little bit in the shade of some rocks before deciding to head back down.

Overall an awesome trip.

Cottonwood Pass / New Army Pass Loop is a 23.5 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Lone Pine, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate.

What sucks about it is you have to give up about 500 ft of elevation to meet back up with the old pass, which is a bit demoralizing 9 miles in. At 14,032 feet, Mount Langley is the ninth-tallest peak in California and is generally considered one of the state's easier fourteeners to climb.

Went up on Aug 2-3. Slept near Lake 2 as we did start the hike at 5 pm ( after a drive from the bay area).

We camp at long lake the next day even more mosquitos and people.

It’s class 1 all the way to the base of the main summit ridge where there are some unexpected easy class 3 moves and some long and hard class 2 scrambling up the loose sand up most of the final pitch. Trail cross’s the drainage from Long Lake to the South Fork Lakes area.Hiking along Long Lake with New Army Pass off in the distance.Heading up to High Lake on the New Army Pass trail through pink “Watermelon Snow”.High Lake at 11,500 with sheer 800 foot cliffs behind the lake.As you pass by High Lake get ready for a workout, your going to climb about 800 feet in the next 1.5 miles or so from High Lake up to the Crest of New Army Pass. Experienced climbers, but we came from sea level the day before.

The first part of the approach to Langley Summit is well defined.

Langley is in sight and the path is clear.

Not to far after crossing the first stream there should be a trail on your left hand side that will take you up the South Fork Lakes.

Total misery hill.

You can easily avoid that going around those rocks and taking a wider path. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until September. I found NAP similar to OAP in terms of terrain and climbing required. More challenging than we expected.

We left at 5:30am via OAP. Descend from the pass and break east off New Army Pass Trail, hugging the high end of the slope. There is small section that is a little tough, but once you get passed the first two - three boulders........look for the Cairns and follow them up.

If anyone asks why you are setting out on such a strenuous hike, answer as John Muir would have, “The mountains are calling and I must go.”Attempted to reach Langley summit on 5th and fell short by a mile or so.

Incredible scenery.

In summary if OAP is clear and doesn’t have snow it is the way to go. Going up Old Army seems doable- we met some folks who did it. Making our way through fields of rock and snow up New Army PassLooking back past High Lake and Long Lake from the switchbacks on New Army PassThe little crevice between the rocks and snowfield at the top of the New Army Pass switchbacks.Looking towards the top of Mt Langley from the top of New Army PassNew Army Pass Sign, if you had your 4 legged friend with you this is where your supposed to stop, but not followed by many. After you have made it to the top and taken a little break start heading down the trail loosing about 300 feet before you head back up the slop to gain it back ( don’t you hate that ). (But also a slog to the top.). We are 46 and 47 year old female hikers in good shape but not particularly speedy hikers who did Whitney on 7/20/20. A hiking trail starts at nearby Horseshoe Meadow, at an elevation of about 10,000 feet (3,048 m), passes scenic Cottonwood Lakes, and climbs through New Army Pass. It only took us 35 minutes to come down. New Army Pass sits on a south-facing slope and it tends to clear of snow somewhat earlier in the season. This trail will surely be abandoned and closed. If you’re backpacking, it will probably take 4 hours or so to get to High Lake, unless you’re really rushing.

Coming up towards the top with Sequoia National Park behindI decided to forgo the usual weather forecast I give on each page and direct you to a more direct and thorough weather forecast for the area.© Copyright 2013-2019.

In the morning you should get a early rise to the summit in case of thunderstorms. They said that as you made your way to the top of one crest you would keep finding that there was another one in front you to climb again.

It is only 5 miles from Mount Whitney and in the same range.
