Syracuse, N.Y. — When Alan Griffin decided to transfer from the University of Illinois, he had a plan. An Illinois guard who helped key the program's turnaround in the 2019-20 season is transferring to Syracuse, he told 247Sports.

Syracuse, N.Y. ― Alan Griffin, a sophomore who spent the last two seasons at Illinois, has committed to Syracuse. Fordham, Marist, Massachusetts, St. John’s, Manhattan, Iona, and La Salle offered him. Syracuse showed late interest the first time around but was one of the earliest to reach out in 2020, Griffin told Syracuse.com. His younger brother, AJ, has committed to Duke as a top ten recruit in the class of 2021.Griffin averaged 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game at Illinois last season while shooting 41.6% from beyond the arc. The NCAA is also expected to vote later this month on a proposal to grant immediate eligibility to all transfers.Griffin is a versatile player who could help Syracuse make up for the loss of small forward Elijah Hughes, who has entered his name in the NBA draft process, and also provide depth for the Orange’s backcourt. The NCAA is also considering a rule change that would allow athletes a one-time transfer with immediate eligibility.

Whether or not he has to sit a year remains to be seen.
