He was always at the far end of weird, even by the Steve Ditko's early standards and Englehart and Brunner build on that by bringing Strange into the far out post-hippie '70s where meditation and psychedelia could melt the mind and a Buddhist oneness with the cosmos is the highest goal (although the existence of absolute evil might suggest a flaw in the underOf all the books which reflect the batshit insanity of the Marvel Bullpen of the '70s Howard the Duck's only real rival is Doctor Strange. Written primarily by Steve Englehart, this trade features (apparently) all of the issues drawn by Frank Brunner. His exploits tend to take place on other planes of reality: either the dream world, or the psychic planes, or maybe down in the depths of hell. MARVEL PREMIERE 9-14/DR STRANGE 1-18. Only later I would discover earlier Lee/Ditko epics, as well as the Colan Masterpieces that would follow. There are swirls of bright colors and rainbow vortexes spilling out of the higher realms. In the first, Strange fights a powerful sorcerer who is trying to make himself into God and Strange follows him back to the beginning of time and then witnesses either the beginning of the universe or the re-creation of the universe. He mostly wants to stay in his Greenwich Village townhouse (affectionately known as the “Sanctum Sanctorum”) and burn incense while he reads ancient tomes of knowledge. Highly recommended.My favorite story: the one where Ben Franklin has sex with Clea (well, sort of).These stories might be more understandable if you read up on the hippie-era drug culture. He manages TimeIsBroken.com where he writes about comics, meditation and football. Anyway, it was jarring at first, but it turned out to be kind of endearing.The series has a pretty strong thesis. It's a good run of stories from the mid 70s and it is a beautifully strange lot or art that fits the character really nicely. The reader is invited to peer into Stephen’s thoughts and inner struggles of willpower and clarity as he stands against phantasmic threats. (San Francisco’s first psychedelic rock concert, in 1965, was billed as “A Tribute to Doctor Strange” and was advertised with Ditko art.

Englehart has been very faithful to Stan Lee's original take but really pushes the boundaries, anything could happen and he will take Strange to unimaginable places, while continuing thI am a massive fan of Doctor Strange, he's up there with Batman and Spider-Man as my favourite comic characters, and it has saddened me for years how underused he is, and how difficult it is to write a good Doctor Strange story. In the second story a religious fanatic called Silver Dagger murders Strange and Strange spends the bulk of the story trying to escape another realm inside his Orb of Agamotto where he runs into unreal representations of people and things he's met in the real world. Is it also a requirement that the Sorcerer Supreme wears leggings and orange gloves and a bright sash around his waist? The tone of the book is a centerpiece of its appeal, occupying a space somewhere near dark horror or mystical dread. The use of black & white negative space is prevalent in some arcs and used to great effect.The costumes are completely over the top. Strange rarely even has to leave his apartment to engage with these supernatural threats — he just folds his legs in a meditation pose and travels inward. At least he noticed the Lovecraftian influence. The stories are mostly episodic and don’t rely too heavily upon the history of the character. Typical crazy mystical '70s-era Marvel psychedelic nonsense. There were points in this series that had me more excited than others. As a proponent of meditation and spiritual exploration, I heartily endorse Doctor Stephen Strange. These stories feature Doc travelling through space, time, other dimensions, and even "unreality" before ultimately confronting Death (and death). Strange's adventures from the early 1970s. The resident occult doctor of the Marvel Universe is calling to me.

Its everything Doctor Strange promised to be and the stories I've been searching for...Doctor Strange is one weird ass comic book. This particular book is a little uneven but is helped by the terrific artwork, which looks great and really helps the story move.
