As a disclaimer, I am one of Paul’s students, enjoy the higher bench, and find it the best tradeoff for me to rapidly go between joinery with saws and chisels, planing, and layout. when Paul mentioned ridiculous he was talking about a bench of 28″ which in fairness sounds ridiculous unless your 4′ tall . It get’s beat up and messy fast. I added a cabinet maker's vise, a wagon vise and lots of dog holes. Paul prefers a taller bench and wants people to know that just because certain authors almost demand a shorter bench doesn’t mean you must have a shorter bench.
