So if you aren't a lawyer, you do need to practice your public speaking. If you want to run for office its irrelevant what degree you have. You can be a salesperson but legal skills won't really help you. Most real estate agents aren't lawyers.Dumb questions, but can you closings and title searches for the properties you sell, or can a real estate agent/lawyer not do both?Thank you. This sub can really be insufferable at times.
Law school can lead to jobs in many different fields, including environmental and immigration law. Or will law school still be advised for a political career?I'm going to go against the Reddit STEM-jerk with this and probably get downvoted to hell for it.
Ultimately, while there are a lot of law degrees in office and working in politics, it's more about a self-selecting set of people that are interested in both fields than it …

This is NOT a forum for legal advice.Press J to jump to the feed. Did you take the bar?
People study certain things. I'm planning on trying once I have the J.D., I'm just curious about timing. Just start volunteering and make yourself so valuable they want to pay you to stick around. If you want to work in policy, a law degree can help you and be useful, but once again is not an essential qualification.Ultimately, while there are a lot of law degrees in office and working in politics, it's more about a self-selecting set of people that are interested in both fields than it is some sort of essential qualification.New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be castPress J to jump to the feed. A unique perspective is great, but lawyers are inherently going to have a skillset necessary for politics because Answer these questions to yourself, and really think about that degree:Would you trust someone with a CS degree to operate on your heart?Would you trust someone with just a JD to oversee the process by which your pharmaceutical drugs are produced?Would you trust someone with just a JD to fly your plane?Would you trust someone with just a CS degree to make critical welds on your car?Would you trust someone without a JD to adequately represent you in the courtroom? This is why we have a variety of skills, licenses, and degrees! A bunch of self-righteous know-it-alls do tend to overrun honestly inquisitive posts. The "circle jerk" responses getting upvoted are coming from recent bar takers who are so frustrated they need a good laugh to stay sane.
You can be a salesperson but legal skills won't really help you. Some hold other advanced degrees in addition to their JD.We're talking about very delicate operations, a huge amount of information, and a skillset that most (good) attorneys have honed over the course of their career. Ask questions, seek advice, post outlines, etc. There are plenty of people with random/obscure professions that get elected to stuff.
It's awesome.I know the FBI looks favorably upon those with a JD also. This is exactly my plan after law school. If you want to work in policy, a law degree can help you and be useful, but once again is not an essential qualification.
There are examples on both sides of the aisle of non-lawyer politicians, including Donald Trump and Al Franken.
And this has become pretty common among law students. How did you get into the commercial real estate field? [Some people get elected without even having a degree.] Yes, we know, "DAE job market sucks?!!11!"
(If you want to work on political campaigns you don't need a law degree or even a political science degree. You can't be a doctor.
Law school provides you with skills, connections, and teaches you to think and argue a certain way. When your friends or family say it, it's usually code for "I don't really empathize with your problems, and don't care to hear more about them.
You can't be an accountant.
You could get a PhD in Chemistry, you could be certified as a skilled welder, or you could be a subject-matter expert on computer science. and all.I took a gig in commercial real estate (graduated May this year) and I haven't looked back. When schools say it, they're trying to mislead people about the actual utility of the degree in order to boost enrollment. And last time I checked, I can find very few politicians with a computer science/engineering background. Only two of the last six Presidents were lawyers (Clinton and Obama).Probably military service is one of the favorable qualifications for people in politics. You would think so, but did any of the non-lawyers you mentioned serve in the military?A law degree is helpful but by no means necessary. Many politicians possess law degrees. Thanks.I don't particularly like the saying "you can do anything with a law degree" because while it's a saying with good intentions, it isn't true.I'm not even sure it's said with good intentions. His campaign ran at a 10th of the cost of his opponents.A billionaire entertainer with an off the charts Q score backed by a small army of megadonors and the Russian Federation, and Joe with his state university CS degree aren't in the same stratosphere.Campaigns rely on donations that harm the integrity of our democracy.A lot of politicians have legal backgrounds, but not all.Recent Congressmen included an auctioneer and a mortician, for a long time a rocket scientist represented a district in NJ.The last three Speakers Pelosi, Ryan, and Boehner were not lawyers. Law is a great degree if you think you might want to be a lawyer. But is it still necessary for a political career? By using our Services or clicking I agree, you agree to our use of cookies.
I know you shouldn't be in law school unless you intend to practice law, but I wanted to hear from some of you that intend to use your law degree for alternative careers.I find it really irritating that the dumb, circlejerk responses get upvoted but the good, honest ones don't.
