There is something mirage-like about Kazakhstan's capital Astana. Continuing my travels through the ex-Soviet states, I reached Astana (now, Nur-Sultan City) from Tashkent. The actual symbolism stems from a bird laying a golden egg within which lies the secret to human life and happiness but the egg is placed in a huge poplar tree, out of the reach of human hands.The Bayterek is a 100m momunent right in the middle of Nurzhol bulvar, equi-distance from Khan Shatyr and the Palace of Peace and Harmony. Kazakhstan has been the homeland of nomads in the past, and the country is proud of its heritage. Nur-Sultan City has no shortage of landmarks and monuments that are pleasing to the eye. That said, not a lot of cities can claim to have held six different names in the span of two centuries.Having been to Tbilisi, Baku and Tashkent before arriving to Astana, I expected Russian and Kazakh to be the lingua franca. As mentioned before, Astana is really famous for its futuristic buildings, all of which were the focus during my sightseeing tour. But as you travel eastwards (towards the ‘stans), you’d find yourself relying almost entirely on Google Translate.For someone who does not speak Russian at all, I was in for a surprise in Astana.
